This week’s question from my portal “The Neagle Code: Directions for Life” comes from someone who wishes to remain anonymous.
David, it’s that time of year… can you give me your best advice on how to set a goal?
I’d be happy to, but first let me ask you a question.
When you set a goal…what is the thought process your mind goes through?
Do you pick something that you THINK you can achieve? Or do you go after something you really WANT? — even if it seems huge and impossible?
Most people choose goals that are actually too small for them.
Really think about this. When you sit down and write the things that you want for your life, sometimes your brain tries to flip over and say, “But, how are you going to do that?”
Before you’ve even given yourself permission to imagine the goal — you’re already stopping at “How?”
The “How?” question is what stops most people in their tracks.
It makes a person think, “Maybe I ought to adjust this goal lower, so that I’m not taking too much of a risk.”
Because you can’t think of how you’re going to reach your goal right in that moment, you might say, “Maybe I’d better lower it down to something else.”
I’d encourage you not to do that.
That’s “settling” for something small.
When choosing a goal, do it as if you could not fail — as if there were zero possibility of failure.
Design your life as if anything were possible.
Because the truth is, anything IS possible for your life.
When you truly, deeply desire something, that’s a sign that the way to fulfill it is already here. The possibility is already here, AND the way to make it REAL is already here.
Stepping into that goal — even if it seems “big” — is what will grow you as a person. (The “how” unfolds before your eyes, as you take each next step.)
So, don’t just ask for “small” things that you THINK you can get…ask for the big things that you really desire.
Then begin to take actions to make that goal a reality.
