This week’s question from our portal “Ask Us Anything” comes from Amy.
I’m frustrated with myself because I can’t keep my word to myself. This has been going on since the end of 2021. I don’t have a strong “why” for what I’m doing. My sabotage pattern is to oscillate back and forth—I’ll tell myself, “I could do this,” or, “I could do that.” I do a little dance where I go back and forth.
I feel like I’m ready to join TEM (The Elite Mind) program, but I don’t trust myself to follow through. I’ve spend a lot of money on coaching programs and I’ve learned a lot. I know I can spend more money, but that alone won’t give me the push I need. It has to come from within. I know I can’t depend on you (David), Steph, or anyone else to make me do this. Yet I’ve lost trust in myself. Can you speak on this? And can you explain more about the TEM program, specifically the first 90 days where you focus on keeping your word?
Absolutely.
The first thing to realize is—you don’t need a “why” to start keeping your word. The only “why” you need is that you want to do something.
“I want to” is enough of a reason to do something.
Between when you start and when you decide to stay in something that you’ve picked for yourself, your “why” will change over time—because you’ll learn, grow, become a new person, and have new experiences.
It deepens, similar to a relationship with another person. When you get in a relationship with a person, there’s an initial attraction—and then you decide to get in a relationship, why?…because “I want to.” As that relationship builds, you have a much different “why,” and you develop a vision of where it’s going.
A goal is exactly the same way.
I think people do a huge disservice to themselves to sit there and ask, “What’s my why?” Your why is because, “I don’t like the way things are now. I want something to change.”
That’s where I was. I didn’t have a big why. I just wanted to make a change in my life. So, start there.
You’re right—Steph and I can’t make you do anything, including keeping your word. The way we’ve gotten around that for the past four years that works, is by telling you to pick something you’re willing to do for 90 days.
The first 90 days of the TEM program is not about rocking out some huge goal. It’s about being your word every day, for 90 days, with a focus and a target on something that actually allows you to grow. Your goal doesn’t have to be fast or big. The objective for 90 days is consistency—and then working with me on the weekly Q&A calls to change your mindset, so that you can develop a solid understanding of the foundation for success.
The idea is… if we can build that habit in you during the first 90 days, then for the rest of the program, you can be a rockstar, because you have all that momentum of follow-through behind you. Then it becomes much easier to continue on to something that’s a little more difficult later.
