This week’s question from our portal “Ask Us Anything” comes from Hugo.
I’m having an internal battle where I just can’t get myself to pick up the phone and make sales for my business. You mentioned that if someone can’t get themselves to call people, that perhaps they should get a job working in sales for another company? That way they can learn the skill?
I’m currently hiring a company to do my cold calls for me. I thought maybe I should sit in on their sessions and participate in the cold calling until I get better at sales. I think that would be much more productive than finding a job. What do you think?
Absolutely, I think that would be a great idea. When I say “get a job in sales for another company,” that’s the advice I would give to someone who can’t get themselves on the phone to sell for their own business.
Here’s the thing… whether you work for someone else or sell for your own company..
Sales is a skill set that you only master through repetition.
You can’t learn it any other way. You can’t learn sales by reading about it, hypothesizing about it, studying it, or talking about it. It’s a skill set that can only be learned by DOING it over and over again—and getting better with each sales call.
For the past 25 years, it’s been my experience that people who argue in their head all day long about getting on the phone, making the sale, or not doing it—they never learn.
They never master sales, because they’re too busy fighting themselves internally all day long.
So it’s like… what’s the answer to this problem? What’s the solution? How do you move forward?
The only possible answer is that you have to put yourself in a situation where you’re constantly going through the process of making sales and learning to master it as fast as you can.
That’s the only way to learn the skill.
