This week’s question from our portal “Ask Us Anything” comes from Todd.
Previously, I owned a few restaurants and made art on the side, as a hobby. Now my main income is as an artist. I’m making art full-time, but I also own a restaurant/gallery where I can sell the art.
My question is—if my intention and goal is to sell art as my primary source of income, am I muddling things up with this second endeavor (the restaurant)?
Not necessarily. Not unless the restaurant is taking away from the art that you want to do.
I know many people who have various different businesses. As long as they can manage them and it’s not taking away from the main thing they want to do the most, that’s great.
When it comes to having multiple sources of income,
the idea is that you have one main source of income-the thing that gives you the most meaning, satisfaction, and value in your life.
And then you create multiple sources of income to add to that. You can have other people running those things, or they can assist you, so that you spend less of your personal time running those additional sources of income.
As long as it’s not taking away from what you really want to do, I’d say go for it.
