Question:
Hi David,
I am working my day job while I’m building my business. When you got started, how did you structure your time so there is balance among self, family, day job, and building a business?
Answer:
Hi Martha and thanks for your question.
In order for me to properly address this question, I have to bring in the Law of Sacrifice.
The Law of Sacrifice states that you have to let go of something of a lower nature to allow space for something of a higher nature to take it’s place.
Let me explain… generally when you’re growing, you have to go out of balance to regain balance.
You go out of balance because something has to be sacrificed in order to achieve your goal.
You can’t grow your business without giving it the proper amount of attention and time, which means that attention and time has to be sacrificed in the areas of family, job or self. After all, there are only 24 hours in a day.
Once your business is established, you regain balance because you no longer need to split attention between building your business and your job. This allows more time for family and self.
While you’re going through a transition, it’s essential to create VERY strong boundaries around how you are going to divide your time. Let me give you an example. If you know that you’re going t need to take time from your family to build your business in the evenings, you need to be very upfront with your family about your decision. Let them know that while you are working on your business in the evenings, you can not be disturbed, however, when you are spending time with them, they will have your 100% undivided attention.
The truth is there is nothing unhealthy about being out of balance for short periods of time, in fact it’s required if you are ever going to grow.
