This week’s question from my portal “The Neagle Code: Directions for Life” comes from someone who wishes to remain anonymous.
Hi David! Here’s my question…
I feel like I’m being pulled in a hundred different directions. I’m a mom, a business owner with employees, a wife, a daughter, a neighbor, a church member, and I’m starting to feel like I’m losing touch with who I am outside of those roles. I wake up and go through the motions, making sure everyone is taken care of, but at the end of the day, I honestly feel sucked dry.
It’s beginning to scare me because it’s getting harder and harder to see where my business needs to go, and I’m actually starting to resent it. I’ve lost the spark I once had. How do I get that back, and still be the best version of myself?
Thanks for the great questions!
I think a lot of us are really raised with the idea that putting ourselves first is not really a good thing. And while I understand that sometimes putting everyone else before yourself can be a kind or generous thing, the hard truth of the matter is that if we don’t put ourselves first in our mind as far as our own health, our own well-being, our own growth, then anything that we actually bring to the table for other people is kind of half-hearted and only at half-capacity.
One of the things that I like to teach people is put yourself first in your own life.
I know some of you might be thinking, “Well, that sounds kind of selfish David.” So let me explain…
When you put yourself first, you actually become the center of your life, not from an egotistical perspective, but from the perspective of:
- you have a specific purpose for being here,
- it’s your responsibility to develop that purpose so that you can not only be a benefit to yourself, but you can be a benefit to other people, and
- that you have the ability to take care of your own needs so that you can help other people with their needs.
So let me ask you…
What are you doing that you really DON’T want to be doing?
If you look at all the roles you listed in your question and you make a list under each one of all the things you do, that you actually don’t want to do, how long would that list be?
And the next question for you is:
WHY are you doing these things? What are the excuses you tell yourself to keep yourself from living the life you REALLY want to live?
Are you:
- Afraid to rock the boat?
- Worried people will think you’re a bad person?
- Concerned you’ll be perceived as greedy, selfish or lazy?
- Controlled by guilt or shame?
The truth is that you’re holding yourself in this place because of a deep inner conflict…and you’re right, it’s sucking you dry.
