This week’s question from our portal “Ask Us Anything” comes from Karen.
I loved hearing you talk about daily practices for self-care, wellness, and putting certain things on your calendar first—like time off, vacations and trips, and other self-care activities that support your body, mind, and spirit.
That said, can you share some of the daily routines and practices you created when you first started on this journey and how they affected you?—and do any of those still remain today?
Everything that remains from where I started is exactly what I teach my students to do in the TEM program (The Elite Mind).
Obviously you wake up and get out of bed. But then I recommend starting your morning by doing the “Sacred Seven”—a series of questions you ask yourself to prepare yourself for the day. This is a practice I have everyone in the TEM program do each morning.
The idea behind it is…
You’re only focused on today.
You want to forgive anything from yesterday that needs to be forgiven, so that you’re not bringing it into today.
You want to ask yourself, “Is there anything about yesterday that I did not accomplish, or any area where I did not keep my word, so that I keep it today?”
Then you ask yourself, “Who do I need to be today?”
If I look at my calendar and all the different things I need to do—who do I need to “BE” during each of those things? For example…
- Do I need to be a boss?
- Do I need to be a leader?
- Do I need to be a husband? (Or a wife?)
- Do I need to be a friend?
- Do I need to listen more?
- Do I need to be an effective salesperson?
As you scan your calendar and your day, you’re reminding yourself that you’re NOT here to react to all these things—you’re here to create your way through those things.
You can also include study time, so that you’re consistently learning and focusing throughout the day.
I always start off the daily TEM program with a “thought for the day,” like a question or a statement, something to focus my mind in the direction I want to go. This keeps my mind very specifically focused on what I want to learn and create—not on something I don’t want to create.
Most people wake up and let their mind be filled with something from the night before, or something random that’s grabbing their attention. One of the worst things people do is get up and check their phone before they even get out of bed. That’s one of the most toxic things a person could do. It’s the first thing they look at in the morning.
You want to take control of your morning by doing the Sacred Seven to determine what you want most for yourself each day.
